Mary Bruce Grimsley Grantham passed away peacefully and suddenly midday on Monday, May 14th  with her family at her side after an acute battle with Lymphoma.

Wife, Mother, Teacher, Mentor and Friend to anyone she met; Mary Bruce spent her life with her ever faithful companion Gaines, raising three sons.  Well-traveled, she climbed pyramids and ruins, toured castles and churches on three continents.  She walked the path of the cross in Jerusalem on Easter in the year 2000 and finds herself at the foot of that cross once again.  One place where she found particular solace was Lake Waccamaw.  Days on the pier or porch watching the waves lap against the shore and visiting with her many friends was a summer tradition.

A graduate of Fairmont High School, where she served as President of the Student Body and Chief Marshal, Queens College, and Fayetteville State University, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education, Mary Bruce loved to learn and loved to teach.   To this end, her career focused as a High School English and Special Education teacher where she also influenced many in Fairmont through her leadership of the Interact Club.  Later in life she served as a Tutor in the LAP program at Hilly Branch School.  She loved her students as if they were her own children.

Mary Bruce walked a path of service to others.  Active in countless clubs and societies:   The Thomas Robeson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Robeson Committee of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of North Carolina, Sydney Lanier book club, President of the Friends of the Robeson County Public Library, just to name a few.  Mary Bruce also served as Vice President in the Garden Club of North Carolina and her love of nature and flowers was unmistakable.  Not one to shy away from duty, she also served the public as a Town Commissioner of Fairmont for many years.

She was an integral part of her church family, serving as Ruling Elder, Choir member and President of the Presbyterian Women.

She is preceded in death by her parents Silas Bruce Grimsley and Mary Ethel Lewis Grimsley and an unnamed baby brother.  She is survived by her husband Vardell Gaines Grantham, Jr., her sons Vardell Gaines Grantham, III (Grant), John Bruce Grantham, Charles McKellar Grantham, daughter-in-law Mace Williams Grantham and granddaughter Mary Baker Grantham Van Ham.
